How-to guides
Getting things done in ShopAlong.
Set up your first pantry
- The first time you open ShopAlong, a short tour ends by asking you to name your first pantry, such as Kitchen. Tap Create Pantry & Stock It.
- Pick the everyday staples you keep at home to start with, or tap Skip to Scanning.
- To add another pantry later, like the garage freezer, open the Inventory tab, tap the ••• button and choose New Pantry…. Give it a name, icon and colour.
Switch between pantries from the same menu with Switch Pantry. Rename or delete one with Edit Pantry.
Scan items in and out
- Open the Scan tab. The first time, iOS asks for camera access. The camera is only used to read barcodes.
- Make sure the switch at the bottom is on Scan In, then aim at a barcode. Items you already track count up straight away. New products are looked up and saved with a name, brand and category.
- Bought more than one? Tap + on the banner instead of scanning again. Scanned by mistake? Tap − to undo it.
- When you use something up, switch to Scan Out and scan it again to count it down.
Having trouble focusing? Tap the item on screen to focus on it.
Add something that has no barcode
- On the Scan tab, tap Add by name (in Scan Out it reads Remove by name).
- Start typing. Suggestions appear as you type, and ShopAlong fills in the category for you.
- You can also add an item with every detail from the Inventory tab: tap ••• and choose Add Manually.
Stock up after a big shop
- On the Scan tab, tap Stock-Up.
- Scan everything, one item after another. The camera never stops to ask questions, and Undo Last takes back the last scan.
- Tap Done. Anything ShopAlong wasn’t sure about opens in Quick Review: confirm each one or tap Confirm All, fix a name, or discard a duplicate.
- Anything you leave for later waits under Needs Review on the Shopping tab. If a product couldn’t be looked up, Retry Lookup tries again.
Make a shopping list
- On the Shopping tab, tap New List. Give it a name and, if you like, the store it’s for.
- Items that are running low or expiring soon are suggested at the top under Add to List?. Tap + to add one.
- Add anything else by typing it in. Items are grouped by category, so the list follows the aisles.
- To put the aisles in the order you walk the store, tap the list’s ••• button and choose Reorder Categories.
Want suggestions sooner? Open an item in your pantry and raise its Restock at level.
Check off and restock your pantry
- At the store, tap the circle next to each item as it goes in your trolley. Checked items move to In Cart.
- When you get home, tap Add to Pantry… and choose the pantry. Counts go up for everything you already track.
- Leave Add items that aren’t in the pantry yet on to start tracking new things too, then tap Add to and your pantry’s name.
- Items you track with an expiry date get a fresh one. Change this in Settings › Restocking.
Clear Cart empties the cart without changing your pantry.
Get reminded when you arrive at a store
- Open a shopping list, tap ••• and choose Set Store Location.
- Move the map so the pin sits on the store, or tap Use Current Location if you’re there. Add a label, set the radius, and tap Add This Location.
- Turn on Notify me when I arrive. To be reminded while ShopAlong is closed, allow location access Always when iOS asks.
- When you arrive, you get a notification listing the low-stock items you usually buy there. Tap Add All to List to add them without opening the app.
Your location stays on your iPhone. iOS watches up to 20 store locations at a time, so ShopAlong keeps the nearest ones active.
Use Siri, Shortcuts, Spotlight and Messages
- Say “Hey Siri, add to my ShopAlong list”. Siri asks what you need and adds it to your first list.
- Ask “Hey Siri, what’s on my ShopAlong list?” to hear what’s still needed.
- Both are in the Shortcuts app as Add to List and What’s on My List, where you can choose a particular list.
- To send a list to someone who doesn’t have the app, tap the list’s ••• button and choose Send as Text.
Swipe down on your Home Screen and type an item’s name to find it in Spotlight.
Track multipacks and loose units
- Open the item, tap Edit and turn on Track as a package. Set Units per package, for example 12 for a case of cans.
- The count now means sealed packages, which is what every scan and restock adds or removes.
- On the item’s page, Open a Package moves one package into loose units, and Use 1 Unit counts a single one down.
Add the Quick Counts widget (Pro)
- Touch and hold an empty spot on your Home Screen, tap Edit, then Add Widget, and choose ShopAlong.
- Pick Quick Counts and add it.
- Touch and hold the widget, choose Edit Widget, and pick the items to show. Count Packages By chooses whether + and − move single units or whole packages.
Quick Counts is part of ShopAlong Pro.
Back up and restore (Pro)
- Go to Settings › Your Data and tap Export Inventory & Lists. ShopAlong saves every pantry, item and list as a file you can AirDrop, email or keep in Files.
- To restore, tap Import from Backup in the same place and choose the file.
- Importing adds what’s missing and leaves what you already have untouched, so it’s safe to run on a device that already has data.
Restore your Pro purchase
- Sign in to the App Store with the Apple Account you bought Pro with.
- Go to Settings › ShopAlong Pro and tap Restore Purchases.
With Family Sharing, members of your family group get Pro too, with nothing to restore.
Questions
Frequently asked.
Do I need an account?
No. There’s nothing to sign up for. To sync between your devices and share with your household, you just need to be signed in to iCloud.
Where is my data stored?
On your device and, if you’re signed in to iCloud, in your own private iCloud database so it reaches your other devices. Anything you share is also visible to the people you invite. None of it reaches us. The privacy policy has the detail.
Does ShopAlong work offline?
Mostly. Scanning things you already track, lists and check-offs all work offline, and sync catches up when you reconnect. Looking up a barcode ShopAlong hasn’t seen before needs a connection. Without one, the Scan tab offers Retry. In Stock-Up, the item is kept under Needs Review so you can tap Retry Lookup later.
A barcode wasn’t recognised. What now?
Product names come from Open Food Facts, a free database built by volunteers, and not every product is in it yet. ShopAlong opens the item form with the barcode filled in, so you only type the name once. After that, scanning the same barcode just counts it up.
What’s free, and what does Pro add?
Free covers up to 200 items and 2 shopping lists, with scanning, Stock-Up, automatic categories, iCloud sync, household sharing, store reminders and Siri. Pro adds unlimited items and lists, the Quick Counts widget, backup export and import, and your own expiry defaults per category.
Is Pro a subscription?
No. It’s a one-time purchase, and Family Sharing is included.
I’ve reached the free limit. What still works?
Everything except creating new items or lists. You can still scan things in and out, edit, check off, share and delete. Items that someone shares with you never count toward your limit.
The Scan tab says the camera is off.
ShopAlong needs camera access to read barcodes. Tap Open Settings on the Scan tab, or go to the iOS Settings app, find ShopAlong and turn on Camera.
Why didn’t I get a store reminder?
Check that Notify me when I arrive is on for that list, that location access for ShopAlong is set to Always, and that notifications are allowed. A reminder only appears when something you usually buy from that list is running low. Reminders come from lists you own, not ones shared with you.
My changes aren’t showing on my other device.
Open Settings › Household & Sync. The iCloud row shows whether you’re connected, and a Sync issue row appears if something went wrong. Make sure both devices are signed in to the same iCloud account and online.
What does Apple Intelligence do in ShopAlong?
On devices that support Apple Intelligence, it puts new items into the right category when ShopAlong’s own word list can’t, and translates product names that come back in another language. It all runs on the device. You can turn either off in Settings › Defaults for New Items.
Which devices does it run on?
iPhone and iPad with iOS 18.2 or later. Apple Intelligence features need a device that supports it.
What happens to my data if I delete the app?
Data on the device is deleted with the app. Anything synced to iCloud stays there, and comes back if you reinstall. To remove it for good, delete it in the app first, or manage it in the iOS Settings app under your name › iCloud.
