Where the name comes from

簡単 — kantan — is the Japanese word for simple, easy, uncomplicated. We chose it because it describes the outcome we are aiming for rather than the technology we happen to use to get there. Technology changes. The standard does not.

What we believe

Complexity in software is almost never chosen deliberately. It accumulates — one reasonable-sounding addition at a time — until the people who have to use the thing every day are working around it instead of with it.

Keeping software simple is not the easy path. It takes more thought to decide what to leave out than to keep adding, and it takes a willingness to argue for the simpler option when the complicated one would be quicker to build. That is the work we are interested in doing.

How we operate

• We make a small number of apps and put real care into each, rather than a long list of half-finished ones.
• We write in plain language — in our apps, in our help pages, and in our email.
• We look after what we ship. Updates follow each new release of iOS and macOS, and fixes are done properly.
• Where our apps complement each other, they connect thoughtfully. None of them depends on owning the rest.
• We believe in open source. Not everything we make will be open, but we are committed to creating open source solutions wherever it makes sense.
• We occasionally take on custom development for others, when a project suits how we work. What we build for a client belongs to that client.
